Nomi is a stronger shortlist choice for someone who wants an AI companion to carry a conversation forward over time than for someone hunting for an elaborate character editor. Its official documentation explains three memory horizons and a common text-and-voice conversation history. The trade-off is that remembering a story is not the same thing as recording each line accurately, and the most useful voice features sit behind a paid subscription.

Who is Nomi most suitable for?

Choose Nomi when continuity is the purchase criterion: revisiting fictional travel plans, keeping a character’s outlook consistent, and moving between text and hands-free conversation. The service lets a character develop in conversation, with additional steering through its backstory tools. This is less manual than building a densely specified character in Kindroid, though users who want to edit individual memory categories may prefer Kindroid’s explicit controls.

A less good fit is someone shopping mainly for inexpensive image batches or native-sounding speech in several European languages. Nomi supports images and media, but those need a separate assessment. Its own voice-language help explicitly says voice is primarily designed for English; possible speech in other languages does not establish reliable fluency.

What memory actually means here

Nomi describes short-term memory for nearby details, medium-term memory for continuity through a longer conversation, and long-term memory for significant events and relationships. None is a verbatim transcript that guarantees a response will retrieve an old fact when requested. The distinction matters: an assistant might remember that you planned a fictional trip without correctly recalling the train departure time you mentioned weeks earlier.

Try a controlled test with imaginary facts rather than genuine personal information. Name a fictional café, say its fictional owner prefers jasmine tea, and continue chatting about something else. Return the next day and ask a natural follow-up question. Record whether Nomi gives the correct name, whether it guesses confidently, and whether it changes the details after correction. Repeat rather than judging memory from one favourable response.

Text, voice messages and live calls

According to Nomi’s voice documentation, voice messages, spoken playback and hands-free calls belong to the same conversation as text. Paid accounts can use its in-house voices and custom voices without a separate Nomi usage quota; an optional ElevenLabs integration depends instead on that separate account’s limits. Calls still have response latency, and a disconnected call may need restarting.

Nomi also documents a 400-character outgoing-message limit for free users and 800 characters for paid users. These concern what a user types, not a guaranteed size of the AI’s answer. If you often write complex roleplay setups, this constraint is worth testing before subscribing.

Subscription costs and the UK billing question

Nomi offers recurring monthly, quarterly and annual subscription intervals, with no lifetime plan in its published documentation. The public material reviewed does not establish a single final GBP checkout amount, so we do not print a speculative UK price. Nomi states that web subscriptions are billed in US dollars, while Apple and Google display the price and currency relevant to their store. A web price converted by a bank may therefore differ from the app-store charge.

Cancellation must be completed through the platform where the subscription was purchased, before its renewal date. Removing the app is not cancellation. Nomi says paid benefits continue to the end of the already-paid period and generally does not refund unused time. For a UK buyer, compare a one-month web checkout with the app-store equivalent and save the cancellation confirmation before choosing a longer term.

Documented detail What it changes for buyers
Short-, medium- and long-term memory Evaluate continuity with repeatable questions, not marketing labels
Voice calls included in paid subscriptions A free text preview is not enough to judge voice value
English-first voice development Do not assume fluent Spanish, French or German speech
Web billing in USD; app stores set local display Compare the actual checkout totals, not an exchange-rate estimate

Bottom line and alternative

Nomi deserves consideration if natural conversational continuity is more valuable to you than controlling every model setting. Before committing, test memory over more than one session and, if voice matters, check pronunciation, latency and interruptions with your own hardware. Kindroid is the clearer alternative when an editable character design and documented memory controls matter more; Nectar AI is worth examining if you specifically want a manually curated list of priority memories.
