The real monthly bill is not always the headline subscription

For AI companions, calculate base subscription + recurring media use + optional top-ups + payment conversion costs. Some providers advertise unlimited text and charge separately for images, voice, videos or character creation. Introductory discounts, annual prepayment and renewals also change what “per month” means. A dollar price on a support page is not a verified UK checkout total.

These are different currencies and entitlements. A “token” in one product is not worth the same as a “Dreamcoin” or “Chip” elsewhere. Never compare raw token quantities without the cost of the specific action.

Worked example: a moderate OurDream user

OurDream’s official Dreamcoin guide lists 10 Dreamcoins for two standard images, 50 coins per minute of voice call, and 100 coins for five seconds of standard video. It says paid subscribers receive 1,000 coins each billing anniversary. Consider a purely hypothetical month:

This example fits within 1,000 coins if the subscriber starts with the full published allowance and does not use premium models or other chargeable actions. Make 30 call minutes instead of 12 and the call charge alone becomes 1,500 coins. That is a 500-coin shortfall against a 1,000-coin allocation before other media. Do not convert that shortfall into GBP without the current coin-pack checkout price.

An annual discount is not a monthly payment

At the published OurDream Standard prices, twelve monthly payments would total $239.88 across a year (12 × $19.99), compared with $119.88 paid once at the start of the annual term. The difference is $120.00, ignoring any promotions, taxes, currency conversion and future price changes. The annual plan ties up more money upfront and may be poor value if you stop using the service after a few weeks.

Kindroid’s documentation explicitly says web and app-store subscription prices can differ, and that its three-day trial converts unless cancelled within the trial period. Higher-memory Ultra and MAX are add-on subscriptions, not free upgrades included in the standard fee. Record the checkout page rather than inferring a flat all-inclusive price.

Lovescape says Chips purchased by eligible subscribers do not expire but are non-refundable; cost per image is shown before generation. These details matter if you buy a large pack on impulse. Candy AI’s help centre lists 100 monthly tokens and identifies image/video creation, custom characters and voice among token-consuming uses, but it does not establish a universal fixed image cost for our comparison.

UK buyer’s two-minute checkout worksheet

Write down the amount charged today, the date and amount of the next renewal, any GBP conversion, what happens to unused credits, and the exact cancellation route. For example: “£X today, renews at £Y on 26 November, 100 monthly tokens, no guarantee of rollover, subscription purchased on web.” Do not assume VAT is included until the checkout says so. If you cannot find the renewal amount, treat the offer as unresolved rather than guessing.

Best-value rule: choose the cheapest plan that covers your observed usage for one month, not the plan with the largest promotional discount. Recalculate after the first billing cycle. All quoted third-party rates above are dated documentation snapshots, not live personalized offers.
