Nomi or Kindroid: the short decision

Choose Nomi if your priority is a continuing conversation that develops naturally, without spending a long time managing settings. Choose Kindroid if you enjoy specifying the character’s backstory, correcting memories and working with transparent configuration controls. Neither product can promise perfect recall, and neither wins an independently measured memory benchmark here: this is a documentary comparison, not a paid account test.

Memory: what each product actually documents

Nomi describes short-, medium- and long-term memory, reinforced by Backstory+, Identity Core and Mind Maps. In practical terms, the service aims to connect previous conversations and recurring people or events. Nomi itself acknowledges that a saved fact may not be recalled at the right moment. That is an important limitation if you are buying primarily for continuity.

Kindroid exposes more of the structure. Its documentation distinguishes persistent context (including backstory and key memories), cascaded memory (medium-term conversation context), and retrievable memory (long-term recall and journals). It also now describes editable Learned Context covering important facts and ongoing threads. Higher subscription tiers offer more context capacity, but that does not mean every old message is instantly available. Kindroid advises using specific journal key phrases and avoiding overloading short-term context with irrelevant entries.

Voice, language and everyday use

Nomi’s documented voice offering includes voice messages, hands-free calls and optional spoken responses. Its in-house and Custom Voices are described as unlimited for paid subscribers; ElevenLabs voices follow the user’s separate ElevenLabs allowance. Critically, Nomi says voice is primarily designed for English. Being able to type in another language is not evidence of natural French, German or Spanish speech.

Kindroid documents voice calls, custom voices and complimentary monthly audio credits on paid plans. The amount and credit usage depend on the plan and audio model; additional audio credits can be purchased. Its October documentation also describes group chats and multiple characters for subscribers. For someone who frequently calls instead of typing, the key distinction may be the practical calling allowance and audio model, not whether a marketing page says ‘voice supported’.

Trials, payment and what happens when access ends

Kindroid’s current documentation lists a three-day premium trial requiring a payment method, with automatic conversion unless cancelled. The trial uses Ember; access to Polaris and other subscriber models comes with a paid subscription. New account previews offer a limited number of messages before the account becomes read-only; old characters, chats and data remain viewable, but the user cannot continue conversation without paid access. Web trial availability can vary by region, and the website says exact local prices are shown at checkout.

Nomi’s subscription and billing rules should be checked at the point of purchase, including whether payment occurs on the web or through a mobile app store. Nomi’s voice benefits should not be mistaken for a promise about its text-message limits or availability of every advanced feature. Neither comparison should invent a single universal UK price: currency and payment platforms can change the final amount.

A fair two-day trial using fictional information

  1. Create the same fictional friend on each service and give both an identical harmless background fact: ‘My character’s brother lives in Bristol and collects vintage cameras.’
  2. Hold a normal conversation, then ask about that sibling after several unrelated topics. Do not feed one bot extra hints you withhold from the other.
  3. On Kindroid, test whether a journal or key memory improves recall; on Nomi, try a contextual reminder and see whether continuity improves.
  4. For voice, use the same 60-second passage and judge intelligibility, interruptions and the actual time or credits charged. Do not confuse expressive voice demos with a guarantee of language support.
  5. Before committing, verify renewal date, cancellation route, whether an upgrade is layered on top of an existing plan, and what happens after subscription expiry.

Which is the better buy?

For a person who wants a low-maintenance companion, Nomi is the more natural first shortlist because the product is explicitly organised around continuing relationships. For a person who treats their companion like a carefully authored character in a long-running story, Kindroid offers the more inspectable toolkit. That recommendation is based on documented controls, not an unverified claim that one produces more emotionally compelling responses.
